The Struggle Against Moralism

Viewing the world from a moral perspective requires the rejection of materialism, which states that consciousness is grounded upon material relations. Moralism falsely re-positions the superstructure of value into a concrete foundation. This is harmful to the revolutionary movement in several ways.

Morality is in its essence an aspect of philosophical idealism - the belief that reality exists within human consciousness. It posits that the superstructure of morals can and must subjugate material movement.

This is firstly impossible. Material reality can be affected by human action which may or may not be "justified" by the values of a certain superstructure. But a superstructure itself can never determine or hold back the motion of matter. Only when a material force (for example the human body) consciously or unconsciously uses a superstructure can a superstructure affect material relations.

Secondly, morality stands in the way of revolutionary destruction. All morality is the morality of a certain society. Thus the morality of our times is that of the bourgeoisie. Bourgeois morals are in essence opposed to proletarian emancipation. The employment of bourgeois virtues such as "family", "tradition", "respecting those above you" is a counter-revolutionary act even when those virtues are presented in the form of "socialist family values" or "socialist tradition". The defense of the family structure, the preservation of tradition for the sake of it is in itself anti-revolutionary and anti-communist.

The employment of morality restricts the means of revolution. A moralistic revolutionary considers "goodness" above effective revolutionary destruction. Thus revolutionary means are restricted to revolutionary means that are "moral". There may or may not exist a new revolutionary ethos after the revolution has cleared the ground. But in the revolutionary period, the only ethos that exists is that of bourgeois morality. Thus any employment of morality within the revolution is an act of partially or completely surrendering to the existing establishment.

Down with the bourgeoisie! Down with morality! For the international revolution!
